24-Hour Advice Nurse Line: 1-877-431-1700/TTY 711 4 Summer is here Summer is a fun time to enjoy the outdoors and swim, hike, travel and barbecue. You can protect yourself during the time of day when the sun’s UV (ultraviolet) rays are strongest–between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.–by wearing long sleeves and pants and putting on sunscreen and a protective lip balm with an SPF of 15 or higher. Be sure to reapply often, especially after swimming. Follow these steps for safe summer fun in the water: ●Always have an adult closely supervise young children swimming or playing in the water. ●Never swim alone or in unsupervised places. ●Teach your children to always swim with a buddy. ●Never drink alcohol before going in the water; while swimming, boating, or water skiing; and never while supervising children. ●Learn to swim, as swimming lessons help adults and children ages 4 and up. ●Take care of your pool to help stop the spread of diseases. ●Never swallow pool, lake, or river water. You can help your kids physically and emotionally get ready for the coming school year with healthy and fun activities: ●Play games that have movement. ●Learn a fun dance move. ●Plan exercise around your day. ●Find a fun new activity. ●Explore nature.
