The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone 6 months of age and older get a flu vaccine each year. This means that by the time your child is 2 years old, they should have had two doses of the flu vaccine–one per year. How to prevent the flu Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we started healthy habits to keep us from getting sick. Let’s keep up these habits this flu season by: ●Getting your flu shot. ●Washing your hands or using hand sanitizer often. ●Avoiding touching your eyes, nose or mouth. It lets members get their mental health needs met wherever they seek them. This means if you call our par tner, Beacon Health Options, or Ventura County Behavioral Health (VCBH), the professional you talk to will make sure you get to the right place for your needs. In some cases, you may need ser vices from Beacon Health Options and VCBH. That is now possible if it’s safe and the best option for you. Beacon Health Options and VCBH will work together to make it as easy as possible to get you ser vices. They will also take actions to keep you from having to repeat things to a new provider. When your wellness gets compromised, you may need to talk to somebody. One of the ways you can do this is by using the mental health services available to you as a member of Gold Coast Health Plan (GCHP). Members can get these services through our partner, Beacon Health Options. What do mental health services look like? People may seek mental health services if they are in mild or moderate distress or have impairment of mental or emotional functioning. They may want to speak to a mental health counselor to discuss something that is causing anxiety or stress. They can also work with a psychologist to complete a full mental health evaluation. Mental health services include: ●Individual and group mental health evaluation and treatment. ●Psychological testing. ●Development of skills to improve attention, memory and problem-solving. ●Medication therapy. ●Psychiatric consultation. Renewals are done by the Ventura County Human Ser vices Agency (HSA), not by Gold Coast Health Plan (GCHP). Here is how it works: ❱ HSA will first try to automatically fill out your renewal by using information from electronic data sources. ❱ If you have Medi-Cal through the Social Security Administration (SSA) because you get Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you have a different process. The SSA will let you know if they need any information from you. If HSA or SSA needs information from you to renew your benefits, they will send you a redetermination packet or ask for verification. ❱ It is impor tant to return it by the due date. If you don’t, your Medi-Cal benefits Getting ready for the birth of your baby is an exciting and busy time. One of the most important decisions you will make is how to feed your baby. Deciding to breastfeed, if you can, can give your baby a great start in life. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months and continued breastfeeding for at least one year. It will help you and your baby grow closer and strengthens the bond between you. Babies who are breastfed have a lower risk of: ●Asthma. ●Obesity. ●Type 1 diabetes. may end. If you lose your Medi-Cal benefits, you will not be a GCHP member anymore. If this occurs, you may reapply for Medi‑Cal, but you may not have coverage for some time. ●Severe lower respiratory disease. ●Ear infections. ●Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). ●Diarrhea/vomiting. Breastfeeding can help lower a mom’s risk of: ●High blood pressure. ●Type 2 diabetes. ●Ovarian cancer. ●Breast cancer. Breast pumps are a covered benefit for Gold Coast Health Plan (GCHP) members. GCHP also offers the Postpartum Care Extension Program. It gives health care coverage during and after pregnancy and for up to 12 months after the end of pregnancy. 24-Hour Advice Nurse Line: 1-877-431-1700/TTY 711 4 Fluoride varnish: Helping smiles stay strong Fluoride varnish is a protective coating brushed on the teeth to prevent tooth decay. It is safe, quick and doesn’t hur t. It’s recommended that all infants and children receive fluoride varnish star ting as soon as their first tooth comes out. It can be applied at well-child visits, other doctor appointments and the dental office. Sources: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; California Department of Health Care Services Learn more: Enhanced Care Management (ECM) In January 2022, Gold Coast Health Plan (GCHP) started offering new benefits and services through the California Advancing and Innovating Medi-Cal (CalAIM) initiative. Enhanced Care Management (ECM) is a benefit that offers more services to members with highly complex needs. Here are some questions you may have about ECM: What is the ECM benefit? ECM gives members their own care team with a care coordinator. This person will talk to you and your doctors, mental health providers, specialists, pharmacists, case managers, and social services providers. This ensures that everyone works together to get you the care you need. An ECM care coordinator can help you: ●Find doctors. ●Get appointments for health-related services you may need. ●Better understand and keep track of your medications. ●Set up a ride to get to your doctor visits. ●Find and apply for communitybased services based on your needs, such as housing supports or medically nutritious food. ●Get follow-up care after you leave the hospital. How do I know if I have highly complex needs or if I qualify for ECM? ECM is for adults who: ●Do not have stable housing. ●Struggle with drug or alcohol use. ●Have a serious mental health condition. ●Have difficult health issues and needed to go to the hospital or emergency department many times over the last six months. If you think you may be eligible for the ECM program, a GCHP Care Management team member can help you get the care to meet your unique needs. Anyone can refer a member for ECM services. How long will it take for me to know if I qualify? Once you have been referred to the ECM program, you will be contacted for an assessment within five business days. After your assessment, you will be notified of eligibility within seven business days. Do I need to submit any documents or proof of my current situation? No. You will not need specific documents. Eligibility will be determined through phone or in-person assessments. Do I need to pay for these services? No. This benefit is at no cost to you. Who will be coordinating my needs? An ECM coordinator. 5 Member Services: 1-888-301-1228/TTY 1-888-310-7347 Get tested for chlamydia Talk with your doctor about chlamydia and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). If you are sexually active, it’s recommended that you get tested for chlamydia and other STDs at your next office visit. Test for chlamydia with an easy urine or swab test during your routine Pap test. Most people with chlamydia have no symptoms. A test is the only way to know if you have it. Talk to your doctor about getting tested each year if you are having sex and are a woman 24 years of age or younger. You may also want to talk to your doctor about getting tested if you are 25 years of age or older. Treat chlamydia with antibiotics. The medication can clear up the infection within one to two weeks. The earlier it is treated, the less likely it is to cause health problems like: ❱ Infer tility. ❱ Contracting HIV. ❱ Bir th defects. HPV vaccine for adolescents Well-care visits: What to expect Routine checkups during the first three years of your baby’s life, also called well-baby, well-child or wellcare visits, are just as impor tant as taking your child to the doctor when they are sick. At a well-child visit, the doctor can: ❱ Check your child’s general health and development. ❱ Detect problems early. ❱ Give helpful tips. ❱ Answer your questions. These visits are also a good time to complete impor tant vaccines and screenings, such as for lead and development. After 3 years of age, visits to the doctor should be scheduled every year up to 21 years of age. NEXT STEPS: Call your doctor’s office if you are not sure if your child has completed these routine visits. Why does my child need the HPV vaccine? A human papillomavirus (HPV) infection can cause different kinds of cancer in both women and men. The HPV vaccine is the best way to protect your child against certain types of cancers later in life caused by an HPV infection. When should my child be vaccinated? ●The HPV vaccine should be given between their 9th and 13th birthdays. ●Each vaccine should be given six to 12 months apart. Is the HPV vaccine safe? HPV vaccination provides safe, effective and long-lasting protection against cancers caused by HPV. It has a safety record that’s backed by 15 years of monitoring and research. The most common side effects are mild and include pain, redness or swelling in the arm where the shot was given. Where can my child get their vaccine? Call your child’s doctor to schedule an appointment if your child is between 9 and 13 years of age. Getting the HPV vaccine does not cost any money. 24-Hour Advice Nurse Line: 1-877-431-1700/TTY 711 6 Drinking too much alcohol can increase the risk of many harmful health problems, like: ●Injuries: Car accidents, falls, drownings and burns. ●Violence: Homicide, suicide, sexual assault and partner violence. ●Alcohol poisoning: A health emergency that results from high blood alcohol levels. ●Unsafe sexual behaviors: Unprotected sex or sex with many partners. This can result in unintended pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections, like HIV. ●Impaired judgment and decision-making. ●For those who are pregnant, drinking can cause miscarriage and stillbirth or other harmful effects to the fetus.
